Dual exhibitions on view through March 1, 2014
With over 40 works by each artist included in the shows, these exhibitions are extensive views of the work of Michael Kenna & Pentti Sammallahti. These black and white master printers are aligned by similarities in the themes they touch; the works of Michael Kenna and Pentti Sammallahti are emotional, quiet, and contemplative. While these sentiments are achieved through disparate approach the works are aligned by Fetterman Gallery in a poignant way. For Kenna it is the impact of light and time on the land that drives the work, while for Sammallahti it is the decisive moment and the structure of Classical Humanism, but in both of their work the poetics of the world's beauty is revealed.
Kenna is celebrated for his dream-like vistas that are mellow and subdued but seem to embody the spirituality of the land. Kenna travels to remote locations to capture images that conjure something of a primal response in viewer's eyes and souls. Sammallahti's work is equally elegant, and speaks to the instant. Known for his handling of tone, Sammallahti's images transition slowly and often with a moody overtone, and his is patience in awaiting the pinnacle moment of harmony between subject and environment is always proved.
