Stephen Strom: A Retrospective

An astronomer and photographer, the work of Stephen Strom is embedded with a sense of wonder and a knowing connectivity. Strom's professional career included notable posts as as Lecturer in Astronomy at Harvard; Astrophysicist at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory; and Chairman of the Five College Astronomy Department. In 1978 Strom began taking photographs. The interest soon blossomed into a second profession; Strom has exhibited widely in the United States, has works in permanent collections, and his imagery has accompanied poems and essays in three publications.

For Strom it has been the landscape that has captivated most of his artistic interest. Geological formations, patters of the Earth's surface- the crust, the shell of the planet we call home are seen anew. Deserts and Canyons; sandstone formations and river rocks; bluffs, plateaus, and hillsides are all rhythmic and alive. There seems to be something ancient even primal about the spaces Strom frames. For us these expanses may at first seem stagnant and unchanging, but Strom somehow manages to remind us of a greater presence to time and place. These are more than landscapes, they are a record of time and place- they are a snapshot of an evolving history.

Strom's latest work, Earth and Mars verifies the relevance and intent of earlier work in a new and more powerful way. Views of Martian and Terrestrial landscapes are juxtaposed in the same body of work. Many may at first be surprised to find that the Martian and Terrestrial terrain are surprisingly similar. Both were subjected to a certain similarity of condition and force- wind, water, ancient volcanos and asteroid strikes. We find ourselves humbled by these works, and we sense a connective presence to literally everything around us. Even at great distances the laws of physics apply.

The retrospective includes new works from the Earth and Mars series as well as a sampling of pieces from six other bodes of work. Together the selection is a powerful reflection on the life, work, and philosophy of one man- scientist and artist Stephen Strom.

New Yorker Review: Fazal Sheikh at Pace/MacGill Gallery

Ether

A trilogy of work on India completes with Fazal Sheikh's Ether series. Earlier segments, Moksha (2005) and Ladli (2007), were driven by human rights and social injustice issues, but Ether is markedly different. Speaking calmly and quietly, we are allowed to look with quiet reflection. Two states of life pass before the lens in this work- birth and death. Dreamlike states too are captured- sleep and dream. The prints that compose the series, there are over 40, were all taken in the sakred city of Varanasi. The cultural and spiritual center is also known commonly as Banaras or Banares and is significant for its location. Set at the bank of the River Ganges in Northern India the city, and the river, are believed to free the soul from the cycle of reincarnation. A body left on the river bead is believed to allow the soul to return to its five elements- earth, fire, water, air, and aether.

In this Sheik's first foray into color photography he seeks to visualize the state of aether (ether). This element and the places to which it relates are personal and internal. Sheik captures the beginnings and endings of the life cycle- with infants in maternity wards and memorials at the river's edge. Sleeping figures and traces of ritual also appear and flesh out the series. The whole of the work does have transcendent quality, and since we are given no explanation of the circumstance around the depicted figures we are invited to linger in frames that open doors onto another space. We stand in wonder at life paths of the subjects and feel a connection so deep that we are encouraged to examine our own.

New Yorker Review: Laura Letinsky at Yancey Richardson Gallery

Laura Letinsky continues to engage the still life genre in what has extended into a 15 year exploration. III Form & Void Full unfolds perception, space, and perspective and thereby unravels the traditional source of tension at the root of the subject's metaphoric vanitas nature. Real dimensional forms are juxtaposed with clippings from her own work or from other sources like magazines. Groupings of dimensional and flat elements converge on tabletops or along the studio wall cast with white ground. The effect is clean but a bit uneasy. Often we struggle to steady ourselves against tilted planes. Tension emerges there and develops strength as it sparks curiosity; we endeavor to determine what is what- object or image.

The work is intoxicating. We are as enchanted by the visual play as we are absorbed by our desire to establish a sense of order and definition. Shifting planes and perspective achieved through whole and suggested volumes are offset by edges of resting planes- tables, corners, even shadows. Our eyes continue to move and flow through the rhythm of the work that defies certain definition. What should normally give an element of stabilization- the resting planes shift reigniting the cycle of movement. Entranced we are left to consider the notions of reality, photographic authenticity, and self referentiality.

Venice in Solitude

The exhibition and accompanying text,Christopher Thomas: Venice in Solitude marks the end of another body of work by the German-born photographer. As with his previous series and publication, New York Sleeps, we see vibrant cities in a moment of slumber. Taken with a large format camera on no-longer manufactured Polaroid film these prints slow time and place to a halt. It is as if Thomas is able to hold time's breath or pause the hands of the world clock- the cities are empty.

In the illusive moments of dawn- that time between slumber and waking, between darkness and light Thomas works. The prints give due justice to these solitary scenes- with a smooth clarity of tone and a grandness of view we become introspective. We are as awestruck by the perfection of solitude as we are suddenly aware of our own presence. Thomas manages again to bring us in touch with the essence of a city- not its bustle and hum, not its citizens or visitors, just itself. In the Venice prints we find ourselves indulging in the lingering romance and cautious of the ghosts of the city in sites we may know the Grand Canal, Piazza San Marco, the Rialto Bridge and other monuments. We wander too off the path and rebuild the lost stories of abandoned canals and boarded workshops. Washing-lines and shipyards remind us of the absent, and we may remember times when we were graced by a quiet moment in a city. How easily it is gone and how hard it is to find; Thomas's work allows us to linger in a very private moment.
