Print-heavy Donation Broadens Collection

Benefactor and Trustee's contribution to the museum collection was nothing less than substantial. William and Saundra Lane were serious collectors. The two met at the Metropolitan Theater of Boston when William was 50 and Saundra 25. William was at the time an established collector; Saundra quickly and enthusiastically learned her way. The Lane collection was vast, with a bulk of focus in prints, near 6,000, works on paper, near 100, and an additional 25 paintings to round out the collection.

The photographic portion of the donation equated to a massive increase of the photographic holdings of the MFA. The donation includes 2,500 images from the photographic estate of Charles Sheeler, the same figure of works by Edward Weston, and fair representation of works by Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, and Brett Weston. Beyond quantity and quality of artist in name is their resonance as a whole. The Lanes were known for their interest in a genre that once overlooked has come into its own- Modernist Photography. The true weight of their interest will be enjoyed by generations of viewers to come.
