Discovered in the 1980's by historian Tom Jacobson the work of Pierre Dubreuil marks a turning point in photography- the moment between Pictoralism and Modernism. Though the artist exhibited and was published in his lifetime his true value as an artist may have fallen through the cracks while photography as an artform struggled to hold ground. Today the work and the artist can both be appreciated.

This new acquisition by Michael Shapiro Photographs is particular and interesting, for it shows within itself a shift in style. We see traits of Pictoralism- an oil print process with wonderful texture, yet Modernist traits also emerge- the work is minimal.
