Image
The sea and sky is ever-changing and in the new large scale color works of Bill Rastetter the two balance and play like characters on a grand stage. Each frame holds us in suspension as emotions stir in our spirit. Romantic and soft, quiet and mournful, dark and mysterious, elegant, warm, energized, introspective- the works reveal and recall emotion. The surface of the water has a sense of serenity- an effect achieved through long exposures that enhance the grace of each scene and the potency of each mood.

In his artist's statement, Rastetter quotes Ansel Adams, saying "There are always two people in every picture: the photographer and the viewer" the thoughtfulness of the photographer here comes through composition and construction. The long exposures do more than amplify effectiveness of the frame; the abstracted sea softens becoming something unseen by the eye. Not only space but also time is woven into the images, and we feel an overwhelming desire to linger.
