Fallen Empires follows Infected Landscape
and takes a look back into time at the failed attempts to occupy the
land of Israel. Through time grand civilizations have tried to control
the land and with Fallen Empires Shai Kremer points to eons of
attempts from the ancient civilization of Masada, the Roman era, and the
Turkish Empire to the Medieval Crusaders, and into the more modern era
through both World Wars and the present Palestinian conflict.
Fallen Empires takes the Inflected Landscape series to
another level. We had seen images of contemporary remains of
destruction- abandoned UN bases, arms factories, training stations, and
protective walls; the new work looks so far into time that the real
question on the artists' mind, "Who if anyone, has the right to own the
land" is put into a perspective that transcends contemporary dispute.
Twisted mettle from our time is juxtaposed with images of ancient walls,
Turkish Railroad Stations, Roman arches, Zion's Gate with video cameras
mounted- the more we look the more we have to question the capacity or
legitimacy of imperialism. Shai Kremer does capture the beauty of the
land and hope shines through the works. Beautiful light, verdant
pastures, seascapes and deserts all have an ancient elegance that
persists even through the scars and destruction.
