Violet Isle
A couple's "two looks" at Cuba and Mexico

Opening Reception with the Artists:
September 17
2:00 - 4:00 pm

Exhibition through October 22, 2011

The couple uses the term "two looks" to describe the litteral duality to their visual approach, their photographic philosophy. Both seem to gravitate to unusual, even unlikely spaces of dynamic composition and strange balance; the work of each compliments the other. The light and color in the work of the duo is rich and the compositions revealing of an every day that is not ideal, it is real.

Alex is drawn to spaces of habited isolation and the strange moments that occur in locations shared by immigrants, transients, and children at play. The frames are felt, hollow at times yet never void. Children become playful characters seeming to sneak in and out of the frames before our eyes. If we listen, we may hear the echo of their footsteps.

Rebecca too snaps curious frames. Often the sense of inside and outside emerges with distinction. Embodied with poetics, she captures intersections between man and the natural world. Often the natural, or the animal is the predominant subject, yet the human force is ever present, especially in images that show caged or captive animals.
