Portrait of Jan Saudek taken by Philippe Vermès
Jan Saudek "Destiny walks down to the river, with two
innocent children" 30x40 cm color, hand tinted, finished february 2, 1991
For more than twenty years Philippe Vermès has taken portraits of his photography colleagues. The frames are elegant and direct and taken before a simple backdrop of his moveable large format studio. The project developed over time and began to reveal more than frames of famous photographers but a generation of photographers, notably those from 1970 - 1995, to which Philippe Vermès himself was tied. The true honest familiarity revealed comes through with power and on the whole the works began to function more like a family tree or family portrait than independent frames.

The work takes a step further- each photographer's portrait is paired with a work of their own, an icon of their creation. Author and image appear as one and we begin to dig deeper into the personality and philosophy of each and every depicted visage. The value of the pairing becomes more revealing yet when we learn the photographers themselves chose one image from their life's work. Usually behind the lens the photographers, their work, and its resonance are brought to the forefront with this exciting and revealing exhibition.
