Nearly a quarter century after its frist release Keith Carter's From Uncertain to Blue
is as resonant as ever. The project began in 1986 with a road trip-
Carter and his wife set out to celebrate their ten-year wedding
anniversary and found inspiration for a project that would invigorate
his fruitful photographic career.
The Texas road trip afforded a chance encounter with Horton Foote,
playwright and National Medal of Arts winner; a spark of inspiration was
lit in the photographer. Carter trained his eye to see exotic in the
every day, and the story of small towns across Texas were captured in
single frames, one photograph for each town. The project continued for
nearly a year; and what Carter recorded in image, his wife Patricia
noted in word. The names of the towns like Blessing, Earth, Happy,
Hoard, Lovelady, Sweet Home and Welcome seem strange and out of place.
The images captured are direct and powerful and the publication that
came of the project gained national and international attention.
The new publication has some special features, including a new cover
image, detailed travel journal, essays, and contact sheets that let us
see into the mind of the photographer.
