Works relating to six of the artist's subjects are woven together in an exhibition that looks back onto the substantial career and sources of inspiration for Matthew Porter. With images that capture the career and legacy of Hollywood icon, Jane Fonda, California's mid-century architecture, and historical locations, and the artist's use of mash-up and collage.

The range of material, subject, and approach brought together speak to the artist's diversity, some fascinations or pogniant moments do come to the surface. The interest in the the westward pull, with some reference to the 1978 essay, "Eureka!" by John Gegory Dunne that "[tracked] the attitudes of New York City literati toward [the] decision to move to Los Angeles in 1964 and [the] unfounded accusations that [Dunne] traded the cultural capital of opinions for the cultural capital of images." Light, mirage, hallucination are used to describe Los Angeles and as we consider the Jane Fonda, architectural, and collage work considering the "Eureka!" essay seems an appropriate frame. The resonance, weight, and even theatrics of of history also come to light in works of historical locations including the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument in Montana.

Porter earned a BA in 1998 from Bard College and went onto earn his MFA from Bard-ICP in 2006. Recent notable exhibitions include a solo show at Invisible Exports in New York, inclusion in the International Center of Photography's Perspectives 2010.

This exhibition is part of the ongoing Getty initiative, Pacific Standard Time.
