Bertien Van Manen, Pjotr and his family, Apanas,
Siberia, from the series Let's sit down before we go,
1993, Courtesy of Yancey Richardson Galelry
The exhibition and signing focus on Bertien van Manen's latest work and third monograph, Let's sit down before we go, that compiles images of Uzbekistan, Siberia, Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova, Moscow and Tartarstan since 1990. The work is poignant and revealing, delicate, intimate views into the lives of everyday Russians. For most of us this is a new look at a people projected with such strength, power, and rigidity during the Communist regime. Bertien is celebrated for her ability to connect to and humanize her subjects, for the trust she is able to achieve and reveal to us. We too feel a connection to her subjects, we have the sense of knowing and of invitation. When gazing on her frames we see as an insider, a friend, a confidant and engage the subjects directly. The hours she spent with each subject is evident. We do not see an iron wall or state produced propaganda, rather everyday people. We see youth at leisure and gatherings of families and friends. We see the little moments that show rich cultural history and often realities of the "other Russians-" the anonymous, the poor, the ordinary; it is these works that have greatest affect on our memory and conscience.
