Henry Wessel: Vintage Photographs
Through July 8, 2011

The mini retrospective of Henry Wessel's work now on view at Pace/Macgill is an eclectic mix of vernacular images. From humerus landscapes to straight shots of neighborhood homes; from intimate moments rendered comical to backs at the beach there is one thing that ties the work together- the quality of light. Many of the images on exhibition and much of Wessel's work was made in the West, California in particular. While the construction of his work may rely on or reference his documentary photography influences, Walker Evans and Robert Frank among them, the quality of his print was unique. The printing trend at the time was to lean on the heavy tones, but this would not due for Wessel. Perhaps influenced by the light that drew him West, Wessel brought out the subtle tones in the liter range. For this his prints have a warm richness and even seem to shine from within.

Anniversary Exhibition: 25 Years/25 Artists

Julie Saul Gallery Celebrates
Exhibition Dates: July 13 - August 26, 2011

Opening Celebration: July 13
6:00 - 8:00 pm

Julie Saul celebrates their silver anniversary right with an exhibition that will feature work by one artist from each year of the gallery's exhibition program. A catalogue will accompany the show and include a biographical essay about Saul as well as images of works included in the exhibition.

The gallery celebrates an anniversary, but so much more than that it celebrates its artists, patrons, and friends who supported, cultivated, and nurtured the vision of the Saul Gallery through the years. To this is the amazing fact that many of the exhibited pieces were drawn back from the collectors who acquired them to be put on display anew in the gallery for the anniversary exhibition.
