Review: Karine Laval at Bonni Benrubi Gallery

MISE EN ABYME

Through March 19, 2011

In Mise en Abyme Laval returns to a favorite subject, the swimming pool. Figures and light shimmer in large-scale painterly tableaux. The palate is saturated rendering our sensation dreamlike and the tone of the work moves fluidly between representation and abstraction, real and surreal. Smaller reflection pieces invert and push us between sensations, orientations, and states of mind.

Scenes from Lori Nix's series The City are eery, emotional, and captivating. Spaces vary and we feel through their variety that something big has happened to a City if not on a larger scale. This is not simple urban decay. The people are missing. Some spaces seem merely overgrown while others appear to be abandoned quickly. Mall and Map Room are left intact, as if quickly. Others heighten our curiosity as the space has been re-rodered or appropriated for another use. Beauty Shop and Bar are left in disarray- furniture pushed aside or fallen to the floor. In Church a no bowling Starline Lanes sign fills an abandoned church which is scattered with other neon and bulb signs. The ceiling has fallen through and a lift stands raised and ready in the center with power chords snaking through the debris.

Most interesting is the means with which they are made. Nix creates these strange narratives in miniature and photographs the model.

Between Zones

Through February 18, 2011

Between Zones is composed of two bodies of work by the Israeli photographer- "Runaways" and "Sleepers." Seemingly disconnected, both series work to capture an interim, a moment of innocence, a moment of flux. Runaways captures female Israeli soldiers on airstrips before their mandatory service, and Sleepers youths of 16-20 fast asleep.

More engaging perhaps for the proximity of the figure is the Sleeper series. The portraits of youths caught between childhood and adulthood are both classical and unusual- distance and pose play a role in each. Faces fill the frames without pretense but since sleeping our role as a viewer balances between caretaker and voyeur. The works are warmly lit and convincingly genuine.

Brazilian photographer Mario Cravo Netto was the son of a sculptor. Netto carves with light; shards of warm tones ripple through the silky shadows to give his work a unique quality. Man and nature, elegance and grace- the earthly and the spiritual world are juxtaposed in his frames. We feel and we remember in his work the connectivity of all natural things.

Netto passed last year, yet at only 62 he had accomplished memorable work. He was awarded Best Photographer of the Year from the Paulista Association of Art Critics; received the National Prize of Photography from Brazil's National Arts Foundation; and the Mario Pedrosa Award from the Brazilian Association of Art Critics.

Review: Ezra Stoller at Yossi Milo Gallery

Photographer of Modern Architecture

Through Feb. 12, 2011

Ezra Stoller's background in architecture and industrial design is clear and radiates from the sharp frames of 20th century architecture with such clarity that we feel to see through the eyes of an architect. The monumental buildings and private homes he photographed with his large-format camera are iconic of a time and beyond that of an architectural philosophy.
