PHPA:  PHOTO D’HÔTEL, PHOTO D’AUTEUR

Exhibition Dates:  September 3 - September 27

Private Vernissage at Esther Woerdehoff Gallery
Wednesday, September 2, 2014
3:00 - 11:00 pm

The PHPA is a collaboration between Esther Woerdehoff and  the Hôtels Paris Rive Gauche since 2007.  For seven years the Hotel Paris Rive Gauche has opened its doors once a year for a special event that invites selected artists to this mini-residency to create a work of art.  In the magical hours of a single day and night 12 artists are given the freedom to explore the space and open the secrets that hide in its rooms, hallways, and common areas.  Each artist is given the chance to construct a universe, reveal an emotion, or explore the beginnings of a fiction.  Artists are juried for inclusion, and their completed work is featured in the Esther Woerdehoff gallery.

Contact the gallery for more information on this event or to request an invitation.

Artist's Opening Reception: Simone Kappeler with Esther Woerdehoff Gallery

Posted By Administration, Tuesday, April 8, 2014
Through America:  Works from the 1980's

Through April 9, 2014

Cocktail reception with the artist:
Wednesday, April 9
6:00 - 8:00 pm

Paris-based Galerie Esther Woerdehoff to present the work of Swiss-artist Simone Kappeler in conjunction with New York-based De Buck Gallery.  Through America is the photographic summary of a rad trip that the young Kappeler took through the United States in 1981.  The work reveals American Culture through the eyes of an outsider.  Images are playful and brilliantly colored.  Often there is a diagonal composition to the frames which lends to a sense of excitement, and the anticipation of new discovery.  This lends an eternal freshness to the work that is otherwise nostalgic.  Time impacts our viewing, and now more than 30 years after the photos were made they remind us of a simpler time.  The work follows that of another Swiss-born photographer, Robert Frank's who's The Americans functioned in a similar way decades earlier.  Kappeler's work adds another meaningful chapter to the ongoing visual history of American culture.

Artist's Opening Reception: Chema Madoz at Galerie Esther Woerdehoff

Recent Work

Exhibition Dates:  February 12 - April 5, 2014

Opening Reception with the Artist:

February 12, 2014

6:00 - 9:00 pm

"Madoz lives in a mirror and sees the world head upside down, and backwards”

                                                         -  Duane Michals, Photographer

The Spanish-born photographer Chema Madoz is self-taught, and perhaps it is for this personal, rather than conventional training, that he has been comfortable to follow his own vision, rather than flow with the currents in contemporary practice. Madoz continues to dedicate himself to his own way of seeing; he collects found objects that he repurposes, and plays with to invent new realities.  These everyday objects elevate beyond their banality to become poetic, symbolic, and surreal compositions.  One could say that Madoz is a visual poet who blurs the line between belief and reality or defies the laws of physics and realism.

Works are playful and profound, at times they seem to jab at age-old questions, like the chicken or the egg debate.  In one image we find the head of an ostrich sunk into a proportionally oversized egg.  This work inspires both thought and a bit of laughter.  Other images feature a giant butterfly becoming a bird, or a music partition as venetian blinds. The photographer also presents new hybrid works, where he creates compositions around eye drawings, which are reminiscent of scientific boards and engage a surrealistic approach.
