Private Collections Exposed
Presented by the Center for Photographic Art
Through June 21, 2014
Robin Venuti of the Center for Photographic Art Carmel (CPA), CA has drawn from the private collections of six local collectors. Bringing private collections to the public sphere provides a window into the perspective of each included collector. This practice of exposing private collections has been seen a little more frequently in the recent past and stirs excitement as well as perhaps inspiration. These special exhibitions are more than a peek into the mind of a collector; they celebrate those who have been dedicated to the act of collecting and give tangible visual guidance for new or beginning collectors.
Venuti shares the story of the first time she experienced the sensation of taking in a private collection; it belonged to Alfred Stieglitz and was at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1978. Certainly the expansive collection was inspiring. The Monterey Peninsula is also home to a number of dedicated collectors each of whom's collections reveal a different take on the media, its history, development, movements and personal inclinations. Works were drawn from the collections of Lisa deFaria, Mary Jeanne Vincent and Richard Gadd, Betty and Jim Kasson, David Ligare and Gary Smith, Cara Weston, and Huntington Witherill and exhibiting works span from the historic and traditional, to the edge of contemporary creation. Each contributing collector was asked to include works they feel most passionate about, so there promises to be a potency to the exhibited images. Works by Dick Arent, Morley Baer, Ruth Bernhard, William Clift, Brad Cole, Judy Dater, Michael Kenna, Ed Martin, Richard Misrach, Martha Pearson, Ken Rosenthal, Eugene Smith, Michael Smith, Paul Strand, Arthur Tress, Jerry Uelsmann, Brett Weston, Cole Weston, Edward Weston, Kim Weston, Marion PostWolcott, and Don Worth among others to be included in the home-town tribute to the region's collectors.
