ICP TALKS: Climate Change
As the world heats up so does the dialogue, and this fall the ICP makes a stand on climate change with an impressive series ICP TALKS. Programming will include exhibitions, panel discussions, lectures, and screenings related to climate change. The ICP opened their fall season with an exhibition of work by Sebastião Salgado, Genesis. In Genesis Salgado brings us images of Arctic circles, lush rainforests, barren deserts, as well as images of flora, fauna, and communities living in harmony with nature. All of his works represent untouched landscapes. These images are primordial and serene, but steadily disappearing. The work is double-edged, for while Salgado's frames offer us rays of hope that virgin places yet exist, we know much of the natural world has been so imposed on by mankind that it is unrecognizable. These fragile places must be protected while there is still time.
ICP TALKS runs parallel with Climate Week NYC and with the UN Climate Summit happening this September; related programing for ICP Talks: Climate Change will continue through mid-December. Note repeating events, including Green Mondays- lectures in the galleries with scientists, activists, and photographers, as well as Friday-evening gallery walk-throughs with climate scientists who will offer regional context to Salgado's images. The scope and stand of this initiative is not only poignant, it promises to be truly significant.
