Olivo Barbieri with Christopher Phillips
Tuesday, Sept, 24
Aperture Gallery and Bookstore
This talk is part of the New Work series at Aperture and will begin with a conversation between Olivo Barbieri and Christopher Phillips, author of the book's introduction. The discussion will be followed by including a screening of site specific_LAS VEGAS 05, and followed by a Q&A and book signing.
Site Specific is a summary of Olivo Barbieri's ten-year project to record and reimagine over forty of the world's cities from above, including Las Vegas, Mexico City, New Orleans, Rio de Janeiro, Rome, Shanghai, Tel Aviv, and Venice. To make the photographs in the series, titled site specific_, Barbieri initially began using selective focus, leading to distinct "tilt-shift" photographs of Italian cities with which he first established his reputation and launched a popular stylistic movement. The result is a remarkable body of work about twenty-first-century urban space and about photography itself.
Olivo Barbieri is a key figure in Italian contemporary art who has been featured several times at the Venice Biennale. His work has been exhibited at institutions, including the Hayward Gallery, London; Centre Pompidou, Paris; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montreal; and Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MART), Rovereto, Italy. His photographs and films are in the collections of the Museum Folkwang, Essen, Germany; Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo, Seville, Spain; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; International Center of Photography, New York; and Galleria Civica d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea (GAM), Turin, Italy.
