In the history of photography, museums and art collectors from all over the world have acknowledged the importance of photographers that specialize in the world of fashion and advertising, such as Man Ray, Horst, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Annie Leibovitz, Herb Ritts, Bruce Weber and David LaChapelle They have all been trailblazers, bridging the two worlds seamlessly. Each of Kern's images holds its own and works to create and suspend its own individual sense of reality. This can perhaps be the underlining unifier to his eye and approach- the ability to make us believe. We see a master's eye and in it references to characters, types, and art historical cues reinforce his intellect and his intent. In the PDNB Gallery selection alone we spot types like the harlequin in Panton Ship or the acrobat in Untitled (Man and Ladder). We find deserving and downtrodden heroes like the young man in Neighborhoods Under Water (i), or individuals with special powers as in Untitled (Model Flying from Window). We see the underpinnings of design in graphic works, the influence of movements like surrealism in works that play with vantage and perspective. We often engage these works further for their sense of drama and engage loose narratives they imply. Kerns fluid use of the media is intoxicating, and the work indeed straddles the line between fashion and fine art photography.
This exhibition will include his most memorable photographs from fashion projects for Matsuda Tokyo and Neiman Marcus. In the 1990’s, Kern was invited to create an artist book for the eminent fashion designer, Yukio Kobayashi, of Matsuda Tokyo. Kern’s surrealist influenced photography was included among a most respected list of artists on this book series, including Bruce Weber, Juergen Teller, Nan Goldin and performance artist Laurie Anderson.
A catalog will accompany the exhibition, with forward by D.J. Stout, former Texas Monthly photo editor and current design consultant for Pentagram. Geof Kern will be signing copies during the opening reception. (PDNB Press)
