Scenes from Lori Nix's series The City are eery, emotional, and captivating. Spaces vary and we feel through their variety that something big has happened to a City if not on a larger scale. This is not simple urban decay. The people are missing. Some spaces seem merely overgrown while others appear to be abandoned quickly. Mall and Map Room are left intact, as if quickly. Others heighten our curiosity as the space has been re-rodered or appropriated for another use. Beauty Shop and Bar are left in disarray- furniture pushed aside or fallen to the floor. In Church a no bowling Starline Lanes sign fills an abandoned church which is scattered with other neon and bulb signs. The ceiling has fallen through and a lift stands raised and ready in the center with power chords snaking through the debris.
Most interesting is the means with which they are made. Nix creates these strange narratives in miniature and photographs the model.
