The complex layers of mystery, tradition, transcendence, and spirituality are wrapped into masking. In a flash of brilliant color Phyllis Galembo explores them all. Her images of African and Caribbean rituals, rites, ceremonies, and festivals have roots in portraiture and documentary photography. Perhaps more important than photographic tradition is our curiosity in the history, duality, and crucial functions these object play in the lives of the people who ware them and the cultures who use them.
