The works of Takeshi Shikamma are grand, quiet, and mysterious. A sense of discovery is translated in the frames that capture Japanese forests. Strange perhaps to think that an island nation would have forests of this depth- they are in reality almost sacred. Though a city-dweller most of his life Shikamma has learned to escape into the forest, connecting with its lovely rhythm in an intimate way by building a lodge with his own hands. The mountain refuge is a place for quiet thought and reflection on the beauty and power of the natural world. We discover with our own eyes the treasures, secrets, and inspiration of the forest.

The prints themselves follow traditions set in monumental landscape and recall the craft of Ansel Adams 1920's Kodak Vitava Parchment paper. Lush and rich the process is almost a lost art in itself. Shikamma's hand applied, platinum and palladium prints on hand-made Japanese Gampi paper are a dream and the show a must-see.
