Exhibition: A Hard Merciless Light The Worker-Photography Movement, 1926 - 1939
Photography as Social Document
Museo Reina Sofia
Madrid, Spain
Through Aug 22, 2011
In the time between the wars photography became more than mechanical vision. As the growing working class grew in Europe photographers turned their lenses onto the worker. Images of the heroic figures transformed the root and the future of photographic media. Photography became document, record, and transformed the way we saw. The exhibition directly engages this shift by including prints along with films, documents, and periodicals. The images made grew out of their frames aligning with the cause of the social movement of the working class. This shift was new, radical, progressive, and forever changed the value and power of photography. From here on it was proven that the photograph could transcend to image and become the movement depicted.
