Gidropark (#22), 2007, Copyright Yelena Yemchuk, Courtesy Gitterman GalleryYelena Yemchuck immigrated to the US at age 11 from the Ukraine and it is clear never forgot her childhood summers at Gidropark. We are surprised to learn the works are contemporary- Yemchuck returned to Gidropark to take these images between 2005-2008. There is a timeless quality to the black and white prints. The often direct look of the figures is immediate and captivating. We engage and are engaged at times by direct glance- a young boy in Gidropark (#34) gazes with a piercing eye and in Gidropark (#4) a woman provocatively poses. Weather child or adult, all enjoy a playful moment in the summer sun.
