Ilit Azoulay, The Passage, 2010, Archival pigment print on paper, Courtesy of Andrea Meislin GalleryRecent recipient of the 2011 Constantiner Photography Award, Ilit Azoulay's images engage concepts of deconstruction, reconstruction, salvage, and on a greater plane inspire reflection on modern life, even lifestyle.
The final product is the result of much work and many images- objects are collected and scanned before being reconfigured digitally against a white wall, which has also been photographed in many sections. The rigid structure of the process is important as it invests elements with a sense of modern archaeology. Collected objects are stripped of their function and tidied- chipped paint reapplied, oil cleaned, and so on before they are divided, categorized, named and finally recorded. The final works are playful and elegantly ordered collections. We find ourselves looking for lines between elements, for commonalities and differences among the fragments.
