The model, the copy, the representation of the natural world became popular in the 19th century. Rather than chance or fleeting observation, or the need to seek sample, the model represented permanence and offered a way to study and view nature without worry. The new ability to view nature in model or larger vignette form opened the door to greater public access to the natural world. Photographer Fiona Pardington has taken interest in the concept of and beauty in the model, in its ability to endure and yet to change. The photograph shares qualities of the model, it is permanent, unchanging, fixed. Pardington's images show how the model transcends the natural but also can suffer from the affects of time- so too is true of the photograph.

The sense of permanence in the model meets an ironic twist which is revealed in and with Pardington's images. The sense of permanence is true and yet imperfect. The model will not move, grow, or expire but they have changed as pigments, for example, used to paint the forms have discolored. The works are curious and seductive, with rich shadows and lush light spreading over "natural" forms. They are mysterious and alluring with an edge of humor- our efforts to preserve and display nature may be valiant, but time outlasts natural and human creation.
