Review: Alex Webb at Stephen Daiter Gallery
The Suffering of Light
Through October 29, 2011
Celebrated photojournalist since 1974 and Magnum Photographic Collective member since 1976, Alex Webb is a heavy hitter. Educated in literature and history at Harvard and photography at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts his sensibility goes beyond the image, and so do we.
The works are embedded with layers of narrative and an absolute connectedness to each moment. Image becomes experience and we are transported, elevated from our world and dropped into each depicted frame. We stand before the pieces as insiders not outsiders. Often we are brought to the developing world and allowed to engage situations we could or at times would not want to find ourself. While the work may have set out to be photojournalistic view or documentary record, they connect and transcend to art with powerful perspective.
