Fine architecture, antique furniture, and luxurious clothing work to infuse the scenes with an aire of elegance; the emptiness and disarray of spaces counteracts our first impression adding tension and with it an air of mystery to each the image. There is a strange untold intimacy to the scenes. Figures appear connected and disconnected, and each moment captured by Turbeville balances delicately between fantasy and memory. In images with multiple figures the women seem intimately connected and yet it is as if each figure stands completely alone. This detachment can at times be unsettling, but does inspire us to engage the image further with desire to discover the narrative thread.
The images included in exhibition range in date from 1977 - 2011. It was in 1970 that Turbeville's work debuted in Vogue and she has since achieved great notoriety within the landscape of contemporary photography. Her experience in the fashion industry is multi-layered: Turbeville began as a model, became fashion editor, and eventually photographer. One can only imagine her insider experience provides unique vantage and perspective from which to create.
The exhibition at Staley-Wise is held in tandem with release of Turbeville's The Fashion Pictures published by Rizzoli.
