Port-au-Prince, Haiti, 1987 © Alex Webb / Magnum Photos.Celebrated for his rich color and dynamic compositions from around the world Alex Webb has gone from pioneer to master of American color photography. The Suffering of Light at the Stephen Bulger Gallery in conjunction with APERTURE will offer perspective on the 30 year career of the Artist with exhibition and accompanying monograph that draws from the artists most iconic images. Featured works include shots of a man fleeing flames and destruction in Port-au-Prince, Haiti; a young couple in a doorway with shadows of a man and daughter in the background in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico; bustling street and humorous eye shades in Bombay, India and more. What is so resonant about the work is each frame's ability to show and tell, to engage on many levels, to reward continued looking. The surface is always enticing, but the longer we linger the more we see. Webb takes us to the places he has been, invites us in, and allows us to stay.
Bold, memorable, and rythmic Webb's work spans the gamut of photographic genre- from the grit of street photography to the sharp poignent nature of photojournalism and the sophisticated refined "fine" art; to Webb it "all is photography." For a media so multiple, photography, Webb has conquered each genre with refined vision. Humor and humanity, balance and tension- the true essence of place, moment, and time is found honestly in each frame.
