Cuban-born Mario Algaze's work is truly elegant. The formally structured compositions and powerful sense of light lends well to his black and white prints. The works are timeless and approach reminiscent of Atget, Bravo, and Kertesz. We are at first surprised when our eyes wander to the print's dates. Many works are from the 80's, 90's, and present but have a reflexive quality. The eye of Algaze is romantic, grand, classic, even noble. We find ourselves delighted at the artist's ability to elevate our time to another plane. We feel a power of perspective as though the lens of time were lengthened and we were looking from a further point back onto these captured moments. This survey exhibition of 35 prints draws images from Latin America and the Caribbean in landscapes, cityscapes, and still-lifes.

Truly exceptional images.
