In a year of AI image corruption, this year’s fair, focused largely on Latin American and Latine artists, feels especially hopeful.
Maybe it’s because I got my first iPhone when I was 11, or maybe it’s a sign of the digital times, but seeing a photograph framed on a wall always stuns me.
Even more arresting to me is a room full of physical photographs — vintage, rare, or contemporary — outside of a narrow museum or gallery setting. This year’s iteration of the Photography Show, held by the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) at the Park Avenue Armory, brought 82 image exhibitors to its main floor in an overwhelmingly varied display.
Something unexpected graces this year’s AIPAD, an art fair focused exclusively on photo-based work. Ironically, the same day I visited Park Avenue Armory’s premier, long-running trade show for fine art photography, a younger artist friend in Queens had a show titled “Requiem for the Camera,” for obvious reasons. Must a classic medium call it quits because new forms demand to be heard? At AIPAD [The Association of International Photography Art Dealers], a program seeded by the coming together of an international group of art dealers over forty years ago, now in its 45th year, photography isn’t dead, but merely morphing again.
Across historic masters, frontline documentarians and experimental voices, the fair builds a compelling case for a medium that keeps expanding without losing what makes it irreplaceable.

Last week, a tree-lined block in uptown Manhattan buzzed with visitors. They were filtering in and out of the Park Avenue Armory, where, from April 22 to 26, the 2026 Photography Show was being held. Organized annually by the Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD) since 1980, the fair has consistently championed its titular medium, but the 45th edition refined its scope to offer a more complete, if unexpected, glimpse into photography’s history and its subsequent evolution.
The 45th edition of The Photography Show Presented by AIPAD opened last Wednesday with a VIP cocktail and vernissage that introduced art-world attendees to the fair’s milestone programming and elite roster of exhibitors. Guests congratulated this year’s AIPAD Award recipient, Dr. Deborah Willis, firsthand, as the artist, author, curator, professor, and Chair of the Department of Photography & Imaging at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts navigated the floor—which featured over 80 top international galleries and the introduction of a new Focal Point sector dedicated to solo presentations. The enthusiasm from the evening cascaded into the days that followed, and through the show’s AIPAD Talks lineup.

On a crisp April night, a crowd of photography lovers gathered at New York City’s beloved Park Avenue Armory to preview the annual show from The Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD), the longest-running photography fair in the United States. Participants included 77 exhibitors from North America, South America, Asia, Europe, and Australia.
The highlights of the exhibition are plentiful. There is a focus on Argentina, Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia, with strong representation for Graciela Iturbide, whose fearless work can be seen at several galleries, including a strong selection of her work at Ruiz-Healy, near the start of the show, upon turning right at the entry. Throckmorton Fine Art had a classic century-spanning selection of woman-driven Latin American art, with an enticing batch of images of Frida Kahlo and the Mexico City cohort that blossomed around the artist and her husband, Diego Rivera, as well as work by Tina Modotti herself. A print of the well-known Lucienne Bloch portrait of Kahlo had a little red “sold” sticker on the caption within a few hours of the preview doors opening. Spencer Throckmorton pulls his selection together as an act of love to share with the collector.
Throughout the 18th century, scientists experimented with light-sensitive materials in order to reproduce patterns and images from the real world. German physicist Johann Heinrich Schulze temporarily imprinted the shapes of letters onto a glass bottle, thanks to an alchemical process involving silver nitrate, chalk, and the sun. English physicist Thomas Wedgwood applied silver nitrate to leather and paper and similarly failed to “fix” any permanent composition. Throughout such early attempts at photography, the focus was not on the camera, but on chemistry and permanence.

New exhibitors joining the fair include Ruiz-Healy Art, which has locations in New York and San Antonio, and INTHEGALLERY, which is based in Copenhagen and Mallorca, Spain. This year, more than a third of participating galleries are either women-founded or women-led.
